Acknowledgements

The publication of this book was generously funded by the Soudavar Foundation in Geneva, and by the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Department of the History of Art, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. We are most grateful for their support and encouragement. From the outset, Robert McChesney enthusiastically backed this joint enterprise. His initial comments after the first presentation of the ideas for this book at the Second Biennial Conference of the Society for Iranian Studies in 1998 confirmed the importance of our interdisciplinary approach to the subject of slave studies. We are also most grateful to him for reading the final draft. Iradj Bagherzade, the Publisher and Managing Editor of I.B.Tauris, shared our excitement for the project at that very conference, offering us without hesitation a publication contract. Though he recognized that joint authorship could jeopardize projects and friendships, he never wavered in his trust in the ‘sisters’ and their determination to see this book to completion. His good humour and patience made the process of publishing with I.B.Tauris a pleasurable experience.

We owe the anonymous readers much gratitude for their insightful critiques that have clarified and strengthened our arguments. We gratefully acknowledge Tom Lentz and Gülru Necipoğlu for reading and commenting on a draft of the manuscript and Abolala Soudavar for his encouragement and support. We thank Mr Ali Reza Anisi, the former Director of the Gulistan Palace Library in Tehran, for facilitating access to that estimable collection. Without Margaret Lourie’s meticulous editorial touch, our text would have been a bumpier read. Several Tufts students helped judge the readability of parts of the manuscript, and we are grateful for their efforts.

We would also like to thank Helen Snively and Mary Ann Kazanjian for their editorial comments, Vika Gardner and Aline Bataseh for their help with the bibliography, and Robert Haug for assisting us with the maps. Finally, Carol Huh deserves a special thanks for assembling the final draft of the manuscript and for securing permissions for the publication of the images. Thanks to Janet Yarker for creating the index. To our families, we owe more than words can adequately express.
